Amazonite is a blue-green variety of microcline feldspar, with a chemical composition of potassium aluminum silicate. It is typically found in granite pegmatites and forms due to the presence of lead and water. The mineral is named after the Amazon River but is not actually found in the Amazon region. Amazonite is primarily mined in countries such as Russia, Brazil, Madagascar, and the United States.
Amazonite typically forms in the triclinic crystal system, which means it has three axes of different lengths and intersect at oblique angles. The crystal formations of amazonite can vary, with common forms including prismatic crystals, tabular crystals, and blocky or chunky formations. Prismatic crystals are elongated and slender, while tabular crystals are flat and plate-like. Blocky or chunky formations are more irregular in shape. Amazonite can also exhibit a variety of twinning patterns, where two or more crystals are intergrown in a specific orientation.
