Description
Our hotly debated anthophyllite tower is a giant! This is a stunning piece that can be the focal point of any room or stand tall in the background. At first glance, this stone appears to be black. With the right lighting, one can see that it shines with a lovely blue and gold schiller that looks similar to fireworks. This is why the stone is commonly named fireworks stone. Faint spots of deep red fade into the black sea of stone. This piece would make a great addition to any collection or a fantastic gift for a geology sleuth. We only have one of these amazing towers. Don’t miss it!
Size: Approx. 9.00″ tall, 868.00g
This anthophyllite tower is a WYSIWYG.
For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.
Fireworks Stone? Astrophyllite, Anthophyllite, Arfvedsonite—Oh My!
Do we have any geology sleuths out there? This stone, often sold as fireworks stone, does not have a consensus in what the chemical composition actually is. This rabbit hole goes deep with information about stones and minerals such as astrophyllite, arfvedsonite, anthophyllite, aegirine, gedrite, and aenigmatite. While our tower does not have strong red coloration, with the right lighting one can see a few deep red spots. A stone similar to our tower has been identified as anthophyllite, almandine (a type of garnet), and cordierite. We cannot confirm the components without further testing, but given the wealth of information on Mindat.org, we are confident that this pieces is anthophyllite.
Why do so many call this material astrophyllite? In our research, it is clear that both antho- and astrophyllite can have blue schiller. However, astrophyllite has a more brassy tone to its golden reflection than anthophyllite. Combined with the other stone that is strikingly similar to ours mentioned in the previous paragraph, this information has drawn us to conclude that this tower is anthophyllite.
If you would like to learn more about any of these minerals, you can start here and search the rest named above.
We found another interesting tidbit recently. AnthROphyllite (RO accented purposefully to show spelling difference) has been used to mislabel anthophyllite. In fact, on Mindat.org, they even state that it is an unknown mineral. However, we have found descriptions that list the same identifying characteristics as anthophyllite.
We listed garnet under the assumption that garnet is really what is included.
