What is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral celebrated for its unique optical phenomenon called labradorescence—a play of color that appears as the stone catches the light. From Mindat.org:
“A plagioclase feldspar with an albite : anorthite molar ratio ranging from 30 : 70 to 50 : 50.
An intermediate member of the Albite-Anorthite Series.Labradorite can display an iridescent optical effect (or schiller) known as labradorescence.
The cause of this optical phenomenon is lamellar structure caused by an exsolution process due to a miscibility gap. The effect is visible when the lamellar separation is between 128 and 252 nm. The lamellae are not necessarily parallel, and the lamellar structure is found to lack long range order (Bolton et al.,1966). Results of a modern electron diffraction study were published by Götz et al. (2022).The lamellar separation only occurs in plagioclases of a certain composition, in particular, those of calcic labradorite and bytownite (anorthite content of ~60 to 90%). Another requirement for the lamellar separation is very slow cooling of the rock that contains the plagioclase. Slow cooling is required to allow the Ca, Na, Si, and Al ions to diffuse through the plagioclase and produce the lamellar separation. Thus, not all labradorites exhibit labradorescence (they might not have the correct composition and/or they cooled too quickly). Also, not all plagioclases that exhibit labradorescence are labradorites (they may be bytownite).Originally found at Ford Harbour, Paul Island, near Nain, off the east coast of Labrador, Newfoundland and Labrador [56° 30′ N, 61° 30′ W].”

Origin of Mermaid Lore

Mermaid legends—depicting beings with the upper body of a human and the tail of a fish—have ancient roots across many cultures. The earliest known mermaid figure is the Assyrian goddess Atargatis (circa 1000 BCE), who, according to legend, transformed herself into a mermaid out of remorse (Ancient Origins).
In Greek mythology, early sirens were bird-women, but later artistic interpretations gave them fish tails, blending them with mermaid imagery (Theoi Greek Mythology). Greek and Roman traditions also described sea deities like tritons and nereids, who were sometimes depicted with both human and aquatic features (Britannica – Mermaid).
Mermaid-like beings appear in global folklore, including British, Irish, Scandinavian, African, Asian, and Indigenous American traditions. These stories often portray mermaids as both alluring and dangerous, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the sea (Britannica – Mermaid).
The popularity of mermaids in Western culture was further cemented by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” (1837), which introduced the mermaid as a figure of longing and transformation (Andersen’s Fairy Tales).
