Learn About Calcite
Calcite is a common carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate). It is found worldwide in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks and is the primary component of limestone and marble. Calcite forms in a wide range of colors, including clear, white, yellow, orange, green, blue, and pink, often due to trace impurities. It has a trigonal crystal system and is known for its rhombohedral cleavage, meaning it breaks into angled, parallelogram-shaped pieces. Calcite has a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively soft and easy to scratch. It reacts vigorously with dilute acids, such as hydrochloric acid, producing bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. Calcite is used in construction, agriculture, and industry, and is popular with collectors for its variety of crystal forms and colors. It is also notable for its optical property of double refraction.
