Calcite is a common carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO₃ (calcium carbonate). It is found worldwide in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks and is the primary component of limestone and marble. It reacts vigorously with dilute acids, such as hydrochloric acid, producing bubbles of carbon dioxide gas.
