Andesine vs. Labradorite, or Both?
What is going on here? Andesine is variety of albite that is “a plagioclase feldspar with an albite to anorthite molar ratio ranging from 50:50 to 70:30.” Labradorite is a variety of anorthite that is “a plagioclase feldspar with an albite to anorthite molar ratio ranging from 30:70 to 50:50. An intermediate member of the Albite-Anorthite Series.” Notice how similar they are?
You’ll often see “andesine” marketed as “andesine-labradorite.” When andesine first appeared in the jewelry market, some sellers charged extremely high prices for stones that were actually labradorite altered to resemble andesine. The technique used for this is called copper diffusion.
Labradorite is closely related to andesine and is also a component of some types of sunstone. This connection is why you may encounter names like “labradorite sunstone,” as well as references to “Oregon sunstone” or “Oregon labradorite sunstone.” Copper diffusion treated labradorite has been used to imitate both Oregon sunstone and the deeper red varieties of andesine.
Genuine, untreated andesine does exist, but most of what’s available on the market is labeled as andesine-labradorite. If a stone were entirely untreated andesine, it likely wouldn’t carry this combined name and would be significantly more expensive. Additionally, if a stone labeled as andesine displays the shimmering effect known as schiller or labradorescence, it is almost certainly treated labradorite.
