Understanding the Color Differences
- Golden Tiger Eye: The classic golden-brown color forms as quartz replaces crocidolite fibers, and iron oxidizes to create the warm, shimmering tones.
- Blue Tiger Eye (also called Hawk’s Eye): This variety appears blue-gray to deep blue because the iron in the stone has not fully oxidized. The fibrous structure remains, giving the stone its characteristic silky sheen.
- Red Tiger Eye (also called Ox’s Eye or Dragon’s Eye): The striking reddish color is typically achieved by gently heating golden tiger eye, which changes the iron’s oxidation state and deepens the color to a rich, mahogany red. This process is similar to how heat can change the color of certain minerals, and it’s a stable, widely accepted enhancement in the gemstone world.

Learn About Tiger Eye
Tiger eye is a chatoyant gemstone known for its golden to reddish-brown color and silky luster. It is formed through the alteration of crocidolite fibers within quartz, resulting in the characteristic banded appearance and shimmering effect known as chatoyancy. This process occurs through the replacement of crocidolite by silica, creating parallel fibers that reflect light in a unique way. Tiger eye is primarily mined in countries such as South Africa, Australia, India, and the United States. These regions are known for their deposits of the precursor mineral crocidolite, which undergoes transformation into tiger’s eye through geological processes over time.
Blue tiger eye, also known as hawk’s eye, is a rare variety of tiger eye that exhibits a blue-gray coloration instead of the traditional golden to reddish-brown hues. The blue color in hawk’s eye is caused by the presence of iron within the mineral fibers, which undergo a process called pseudomorphism. This occurs when the original crocidolite fibers in tiger’s eye are replaced by quartz during the formation process, resulting in the blue coloration. There is also red tiger eye that is sometimes heat treated, but it also occurs naturally. We hope to bring you more of these other types in the near future.
Red tiger is another beast unto itself. It is said that it is more difficult to find it naturally, but it does exist. It takes high temperature heating to change the color. This does occur in nature. However, much of the market seems to be flooded with heat-treated pieces. You will also find dyed red tiger eye, but they are different shades of red than the heat-treated or natural pieces. They tend to look like dyed and more on the fuchsia side. There are also green dyed pieces and lighter blue dyed pieces out there.
