This ruby in kyanite diamond is a WYSIWYG.
For those who are unfamiliar with WYSIWYG, it means: What You See Is What You Get. Pieces identified as WYSIWYGs are not a random pull of stones that are similar to the one(s) pictured. Instead, you receive the actual piece that is pictured.
Get to Know Kyanite
Kyanite is a mineral that belongs to the silicate group, specifically the aluminosilicate subgroup. Its chemical composition is typically Al2SiO5, meaning it consists of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen atoms. Kyanite is formed through regional metamorphism, where high pressures and temperatures alter existing rocks, such as clay minerals or sedimentary rocks, into kyanite-bearing rocks. This process usually occurs in mountain-building events like orogenies.
Kyanite is primarily mined in countries like the United States, Brazil, Switzerland, Russia, and Kenya. In the United States, significant deposits can be found in states like North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia. The mineral is extracted through mining techniques such as open-pit mining or underground mining.
Blue Versus Black Kyanite
In terms of chemical composition, blue kyanite and black kyanite are essentially the same, both consisting of Al2SiO5. The color variation between the two types is often due to differing trace elements or structural defects within the crystal lattice. These variations do not affect the overall chemical composition of the mineral. If you would like to learn more about kyanite, click this link.
Learn About Ruby
From Mindat.org:
A red, gem variety of corundum. The red colour is caused by minor amounts of trivalent Cr replacing Al in the crystal structure. In traditional gemological terms, ruby has to be blood-red and of clear, facetable quality to justify the name. However, in wider usage, any corundum with a red or reddish colour has attracted the name ‘ruby’, and this name is usually applied in this way by mineral collectors.
Pink corundum is typically referred to in gemological terminology as pink sapphire rather than ruby.
- Ruby in Kyanite:
Ruby crystals embedded in blue kyanite matrix. This combo is popular for its striking color contrast and is often found in India and Nepal.
- Ruby in Zoisite (Anyolite):
A vibrant green zoisite matrix with ruby inclusions, sometimes with black hornblende. This material is commonly called “anyolite” and is found mainly in Tanzania.
- Ruby in Fuchsite:
Ruby crystals included in green fuchsite mica, producing a beautiful pink-on-green effect. This is often sourced from southern India.
- Ruby in Feldspar:
Ruby can sometimes be found within feldspar minerals, creating unique cabochons or specimens.
- Ruby in Marble:
Many rubies are formed in marble (especially from Myanmar and Vietnam), and specimens sometimes show ruby crystals still in their white marble host rock.
- Ruby in Quartz:
Occasionally, ruby can be found included in quartz, creating attractive and rare specimens.
Learn About Ruby in Kyanite
Ruby in kyanite is a striking natural mineral combination where vivid red ruby crystals are embedded within blue kyanite matrix. This pairing forms through unique geological processes, often in metamorphic environments rich in aluminum and silica. The contrasting colors—ruby’s deep red and kyanite’s blue—make these specimens highly prized by collectors and lapidary artists. Ruby in kyanite is primarily found in India and Nepal, and is often cut into cabochons, beads, or decorative pieces. The material is valued for its beauty, rarity, and the visual harmony created by two distinct minerals growing together in a single stone.

Please Note:
- Sizes and weights are approximate. Dimension sizes can vary based on the way the rock is formed. We hand measure our pieces on the longest side. Please see the pictures in the listing.
- The colors may vary due to monitor and lighting differences.
- Please use your own judgment when allowing children to handle.
- Not suggested for use in animal habitats or fish tanks.
- UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
