A Little About Hematite
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₂O₃. It is part of the Hematite Group, also known as the Corundum Group. It’s one of the most abundant and important sources of iron ore, typically forming in metallic gray, black, or reddish-brown crystals and masses. Hematite crystallizes in the trigonal system and often appears as tabular, platy, or micaceous aggregates, as well as botryoidal or earthy forms. Its metallic luster and high density make it easily identifiable. Hematite is commonly found in sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks worldwide, frequently occurring alongside minerals like quartz, magnetite, and goethite. When powdered, it produces a characteristic red streak. Did you know that hematite is not magnetic?
Most natural hematite is only very weakly magnetic or not magnetic at all. While hematite is an iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), its crystal structure doesn’t allow for strong magnetism like you’d find in magnetite (Fe₃O₄). Sometimes, specimens sold as “magnetic hematite” are actually synthetic materials—often called “hematine” or “magnetized hematite”—which are manufactured to be magnetic but are not true hematite.
