About Kunzite
Kunzite is the pink to light violet variety of the mineral spodumene, a lithium aluminum inosilicate (LiAl(SiO₃)₂). It was first identified in California in the early 20th century and named after famed gemologist George F. Kunz. Kunzite’s color is due to trace amounts of manganese and can fade when exposed to prolonged sunlight. It typically forms in large, well-formed prismatic crystals within lithium-rich pegmatites. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, kunzite is suitable for jewelry but requires care to avoid cleavage and color loss. Major sources include Afghanistan, Brazil, Madagascar, and the United States.
