Caribbean calcite is prized for its tranquil color palette and layered appearance. The faceted cut adds extra brilliance and texture, capturing the light from every angle for a subtle, sophisticated shine.

Common Confusion: Caribbean Calcite, Blue Aragonite & Hemimorphite

Due to its color and banding, Caribbean calcite is sometimes mistaken for blue aragonite and hemimorphite. While these minerals may look similar at a glance, Caribbean calcite is a distinct type of calcite. Blue aragonite, on the other hand, is a separate mineral with a more vibrant blue and banding with brown and white commonly found, while hemimorphite often appears lighter and brighter.
Furthermore, calcite and aragonite are very similar, as they are both calcium carbonate minerals. Aragonite is a polymorph of calcite. Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate mineral. If you are ever confused between calcite and aragonite, look for banding and at the texture. Banding is more commonly present in aragonite. Aragonite will usually be less smooth with a grainier appearance. If you are ever confused between either calcite or blue aragonite and hemimorphite, look to the price and the form it takes. Hemimorphite is expensive and more commonly found in specimens. Some smaller pieces might be inexpensive, though, but they are still more likely to be in a raw specimen form. If you happen to find jewelry, the pieces have look similar to larimar with much less color variation and on the paler end of the spectrum. They will also have high per kg prices.

More About Caribbean Calcite

Caribbean calcite is a mineral that is found in Pakistan and is named for its color resembling the beaches of the Caribbean. There is some debate within the mineral community about whether Caribbean calcite is a pure form of calcite or a blend of aragonite and calcite. The unique blue coloration of Caribbean calcite is believed to be due to the presence of copper impurities in the crystal structure. Mining locations for Caribbean calcite include regions in Pakistan where the mineral is extracted and processed for various uses.
