Amethyst is a stunning purple variety of quartz, with the chemical formula SiO2. Its color is caused by trace amounts of iron and is influenced by factors like exposure to natural radiation and heat. Amethyst is found in various locations worldwide, including Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, and the United States. It often forms in geodes, where it can grow in various habits, such as:
Druzy: A coating of tiny crystals.
Geode: A hollow rock lined with crystals.
Enhydro: A crystal with liquid inside.
Phantom: A crystal with a “phantom” of an earlier growth stage.
When amethyst, citrine, and smoky quartz are growing, the primary difference for the coloration results from natural heating and irradiation processes. That is why you can find smoky citrine, ametrine, and so much more. This does not account for artificial changes that are done post mining. These processes attempt to mimic the natural processes, but there is usually a clear difference in how these treated pieces look compared to the naturally-occurring pieces. Pink amethyst is a variety of quartz that exhibits a pink to lavender hue due to the presence of iron impurities in its chemical composition. The chemical composition of pink amethyst is primarily silicon dioxide (SiO2) with traces of iron that give it its pink coloration. Pink amethyst is typically found in regions with significant quartz deposits, such as Brazil and Uruguay. Mining locations for pink amethyst include the Minas Gerais region in Brazil and the Artigas Department in Uruguay, where it is extracted and processed for use in jewelry and decorative objects.
