What is black quartz? Black quartz is irradiated smoky quartz. Does that mean it was irradiated by man or in nature? The answer to that is, it depends. From our understanding, if the matrix regions still appear to be whitish, it is likely irradiated by man. This is sometimes done to make fake smoky quartz or enhance the darkness of natural smoky quartz as well. However, if the piece is darker and more uniform in coloration within the matrix, it is likely a natural specimen.
