How Does Rose Quartz Get Its Color?
Recent research shows that the pink color of most rose quartz comes from tiny fibers found inside the stone. Scientists studied rose quartz samples from 29 locations around the world and discovered that these fibers are extremely small—about 0.1 to 0.5 micrometers wide. These pink fibers do not appear in the rare, well-formed crystals known as “pink quartz.” Tests revealed that the pink color is caused by a special interaction between iron and titanium within these fibers, which absorbs light at a specific wavelength (500 nm) and gives rose quartz its rosy appearance. While the fibers are similar to the mineral dumortierite based on some tests, other analyses show they may actually be a closely related but different material. This means that the pink color in most massive rose quartz is due to these unique, fibrous inclusions rather than something spread evenly throughout the crystal.
