Fluorite is part of the fluorite group. Also known as fluorspar, is a mineral with the chemical formula CaF2. It’s composed of calcium fluoride, and its remarkable variety of colors is due to the presence of different impurities within its crystal structure. These impurities, such as rare earth elements or transition metals, absorb specific wavelengths of light, resulting in a stunning range of hues, including purple, green, yellow, blue, and clear.
Fluorite crystals can form in various shapes, such as cubes, octahedrons, and dodecahedrons. The specific crystal habit is influenced by the conditions under which the mineral forms.

On the other hand, yellow, green, or clear fluorite colors are less likely to fluoresce or may not fluoresce at all. The presence of certain trace elements or impurities in the fluorite crystal structure can influence its fluorescence properties, leading to variations in fluorescence among different colors of fluorite. - UV Notes: For gemstones, 365nm is the best for UV lighting. Only some specimens illuminate under the other part of this spectrum (370-400nm). This is why some pictures are not as clear for our UV reactive pieces. Our current lights are at 395nm. For home use, the 395nm is less expensive, but in some cases, will need a zoomed beam on the flashlight style UV lights. If you do use a 365nm light, please take care to use eye protection.
