A Bit About Malachite
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with the formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. It forms in the upper oxidized zones of copper deposits, often alongside azurite, chrysocolla, and other copper minerals. Malachite is recognized by its vibrant green color and distinctive banded patterns, which result from variations in copper content and crystal growth. It typically develops as botryoidal (grape-like) masses, stalactites, or fibrous aggregates. With a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, malachite is relatively soft and can be easily carved or polished. Major sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, Australia, and the southwestern United States.
